Why is vacuum the most important number in carpet cleaning?

Because cleaning is finished by what comes back out, not by what goes in. Vacuum is what removes the water and the suspended soil. Weak extraction leaves both behind, which is what causes slow drying, returning stains and fast resoiling.

The myth

Cleaning power comes from what goes into the carpet — the heat, the pressure, the chemistry. Get those right and the carpet is clean.

The reality

Those things only loosen the soil. Nothing is actually cleaned until the water leaves, because the dirt leaves with it. Water that stays in your carpet is not clean water. It is dirty water that has been left behind, and everything about how your carpet looks and feels next week depends on how much of it came back up the hose.

Vacuum is the least advertised number in this trade and the one that decides the outcome.

The physics

There are actually two vacuum numbers, and almost nobody explains the difference.

Lift — measured in inches of mercury, or inches of water lift — is how hard a machine pulls. It’s the force that drags water up out of the pile against gravity and against the fibre holding onto it.

Airflow — measured in CFM, cubic feet per minute — is how much air the machine moves. Airflow is what carries the water away once lift has broken it free, and it’s what keeps drying the fibre after the water has gone.

Here is the part that matters: they trade against each other. A system pulling around 6 inches of mercury of lift moves roughly 175 CFM of air. Push the lift up to 10 inches and the airflow falls to about 150. You cannot simply have more of both by turning something up.

So “powerful vacuum” is not one number. A machine with big lift and poor airflow yanks water out of the pile and then struggles to carry it away. A machine with big airflow and weak lift moves plenty of air across a carpet that is still holding water down where the air can’t reach. What you want is balance, and an operator who understands which one the job in front of them needs.

And then there is the part nobody mentions at all: whatever the machine produces at the van is not what arrives at the wand. Vacuum is lost over the length of the hose, and that loss gets worse the harder the machine is working. That deserves its own explanation — why long hose runs can leave your carpet wetter.

Why it matters

Every complaint people have about a carpet clean traces back to water that stayed behind.

  • It’s still damp two days later. Not the weather. Weather changes drying by hours. Water left in the backing changes it by days.
  • The stain came back. Old soil down in the backing dissolves in the water that was left there, and rides back up to the surface as it evaporates.
  • It got dirty again quickly. Damp fibre grabs and holds soil. A carpet that dried slowly starts looking tired far sooner than one that dried fast.
  • It smells faintly musty. Warm, damp backing held for two or three days is simply a good environment for things you’d rather not have growing.

None of those feel like a vacuum problem when they happen to you. All of them are.

Questions to ask before booking

  1. How much of the job is dry passes? Extraction with no solution running is where the water actually leaves. It costs nothing but time, and it’s the first thing dropped when someone is fitting six jobs into a day.
  2. How do you decide the carpet is dry enough to leave? Listen for a method, not a feeling.
  3. Where will you park, and how much hose will you run?
  4. What dry time are you telling me, and what happens if it’s wrong?
  5. Is your machine’s vacuum set up for lift or for airflow? You are not really asking for the number. You are finding out whether they know there are two.

No — and past a point it's actively worse. Carpet is cleaned at around 200–300 PSI, and we never go past 500 on any fabric. Push harder than the fibre needs and you stop lifting water out and start driving it into the backing. That's how carpet delaminates, that's how a mark wicks back up to the surface two days later, and it's why an over-pressured carpet is still damp the next morning. So a big pressure figure isn't a better clean — it's a different job. Machines advertising 1,000 PSI and up aren't wrong; that's a tile and grout figure, and hard floors genuinely want it.
