Does carpet cleaning remove allergens and dust mites?

It removes a great deal of both, by heat and extraction rather than by disinfecting. The allergen that affects people is mostly dust-mite droppings and skin debris, and those are physically flushed out and vacuumed away. It is a substantial reduction, not sterilisation, and it does not last forever.

The myth

Two of them, pointing in opposite directions.

One: carpet cleaning is cosmetic — it makes things look better and does nothing for what you’re breathing.

Two: a good clean sterilises the carpet and the allergy problem is solved.

Both are wrong, and the truth sits in a more useful place than either.

The reality

Carpet cleaning removes a substantial amount of allergen, and it does it mechanically — by heat loosening it, water suspending it, and vacuum carrying it out of the house.

It is not disinfection. It does not sterilise. And it isn’t permanent, because the things producing the allergen live in your home and carry on living there. What it does is reset the load — and for people who react, the load is what matters.

The physics — what’s actually in there

Dust mites are microscopic, they don’t bite, and they aren’t the allergen. They live in soft furnishings and feed on shed human skin, of which a household produces a surprising amount.

What people react to is their droppings — plus fragments of dead mites. These are tiny, light, protein-based particles that sit in the pile and become airborne when the carpet is walked on.

That detail changes what “cleaning” has to achieve. You are not hunting an insect. You are removing a fine protein dust that has settled deep into a fibre matrix, along with the skin debris feeding the population that produces it.

Which is why extraction matters more here than anywhere else.

The three things that actually shift it

Heat. Dust mites cannot survive sustained temperatures above roughly 55–60°C. Water delivered to the fibre well above that clears the threshold where they live. → Does hotter water clean better?

Suspension. Allergen particles cling to fibre through static and moisture. Hot water with the right chemistry releases them into suspension so they can move.

Extraction — the one that finishes the job. Everything above only loosens the allergen. If it isn’t pulled out of the carpet and into the machine, it’s still in your house — just redistributed. → Vacuum: the number nobody talks about

And a fourth, afterwards: drying. Dust mites need humidity. A carpet that stays damp for three days is a better environment for them than one dry in three hours — so slow drying partly undoes the work.

What it doesn’t do — stated plainly

  • It doesn’t sterilise. Nothing you can safely do to a carpet in a family home sterilises it, and anyone claiming otherwise is describing a laboratory.
  • It isn’t permanent. Skin keeps shedding, mites recolonise, and the population rebuilds over months. Regular cleaning is what holds the level down.
  • It isn’t a medical treatment. We are not qualified to tell you what it will do for anyone’s symptoms, and we won’t pretend to be. Ask your GP about symptoms; ask us about what leaves the carpet.
  • Carpet isn’t the enemy. Well-maintained carpet traps particles and holds them until they’re extracted, rather than letting them circulate the way a hard floor does. The problem isn’t carpet — it’s carpet that never gets emptied.

Why it matters

  • Mattresses hold more than carpets do, because that’s where the skin comes from. If allergy is the reason you’re cleaning, the bed matters at least as much as the floor.
  • Vacuuming at home helps but doesn’t reach. Domestic vacuums remove surface debris; they don’t lift what’s bonded near the base of the pile.
  • Frequency beats intensity. Holding the level down consistently does more than one heroic clean a year.
  • Slow drying undoes part of it, which makes extraction and dry time an allergy issue, not just a convenience one.

Questions to ask before booking

  1. What temperature reaches the fibre, and how do you know?
  2. How much of what you loosen actually leaves the house? That’s an extraction question.
  3. How long will it stay damp? Humidity is what lets the population rebuild.
  4. Do you treat mattresses as well? That’s where the skin is.
  5. What can’t this fix? A cleaner who answers that honestly is worth more than one who promises relief.
