Which carpet cleaning method is best?

There is no single best method — there is a best one for the state your carpet is in. Hot-water extraction is what the industry standard calls restorative, and what carpet makers require for warranty. Low-moisture methods are classed as interim and are faster back in service. Most carpets need both.

Every method puts something into your carpet. Only some of them take it back out again.

That one sentence sorts the whole market, and you can check it yourself on any quote you’re given. It is the difference the rest of this page is built on.

First, a declaration

We clean carpet for a living, and we use hot-water extraction. So read this knowing which side of it we sit on.

What we can offer instead of neutrality is that every factual claim here is checkable. The industry standard is named. The carpet manufacturers are quoted. Where a competitor makes a claim about our method, we quote them word for word with a date, rather than paraphrasing them into something easier to argue with. And where another method genuinely beats ours, that is written down too — including the one we use ourselves when hot water is the wrong answer.

If any of it stops being true, tell us and we’ll fix it.

A brand is not a method

Most of the confusion in this trade comes from one thing: companies market a brand name, and customers think they are choosing between brands. They are not. There are five methods, and every carpet cleaning company in the world uses one of them.

  • Hot-water extraction — also sold as steam cleaning, truck-mount, deep clean
  • Hot carbonating extraction — carbonated solution, low moisture
  • Encapsulation — a polymer that crystallises around the soil, vacuumed out later
  • Bonnet — an absorbent pad spun over the carpet face
  • Dry compound — a damp absorbent powder buffed through the pile, then vacuumed

Once you know which of the five you are being quoted for, the brand name stops mattering and the questions get much easier.

The one thing that separates them

Three of those five have no extraction step. Encapsulation, bonnet and dry compound all put a cleaning agent into the carpet and rely on vacuuming to get it back out afterwards.

That is not a criticism — it is how they work, and it is why they dry so fast. But it does mean the honest question to ask about any carpet clean is not what does it use, it is:

What is still in my carpet when you leave, and how did it get out?

What you are actually deciding

Not which method is best. Which method suits the state your carpet is in right now.

A commercial floor that needs to be back in service in half an hour is a different problem from a family lounge that has not been cleaned in three years. One of those wants speed. The other wants everything lifted out of the base of the pile. No method does both, and any company that tells you theirs does is selling.

The rest of this page is the detail: what each method is, what it is genuinely best at, what the industry standard says about when to use it, what your carpet’s manufacturer requires — and the three things our competitors say about hot-water extraction, answered properly.

The five methods, side by side

No stars and no scores. Every cell here is a fact you can check, and where a number is a company’s own claim about itself, it is labelled as one.

How to read that table

The dry-time column is the one to be careful with. Fast drying is a real advantage and a genuine reason to choose a low-moisture method. But notice what produces it: three of the five dry fast because they never put much water in — and never take much out either. Speed and depth are trading against each other in that column, not lining up.

The last two columns are not our opinion. IICRC S100 is the industry standard for professional carpet cleaning, and the warranty column comes from the carpet manufacturers themselves. Both are covered properly further down.

⚠️ And one honest caveat about our own row. 2–4 hours is our figure in decent airflow and low humidity, and a Regular clean on a cold, still day takes longer. Any dry time on this table — ours included — assumes the job was done properly. A badly done hot-water extraction can leave carpet wet for two days, and that is not the method’s fault or its defence.

The five, one at a time

Hot-water extraction

Heated solution is injected into the pile under pressure and pulled straight back out, along with the soil it has loosened. It is what most people mean by steam cleaning, and what a van-mounted machine is built to do.

Best at: getting soil out of the base of the pile — the grit sitting down at the fibre roots that grinds carpet flat over years. It is the only one of the five that rinses.

Its real limitation: it puts genuine water into your floor, and the whole job then depends on how much of it comes back out. Done badly it is the worst of the five, because the others cannot leave your carpet wet for two days and this one can.

Who uses it: most full-service cleaners, and every truck-mounted operation.

What do the numbers on a carpet cleaning quote actually mean?

Hot carbonating extraction

A carbonated solution is worked into the pile and extracted, using markedly less water than a conventional hot-water machine.

Best at: speed back into the room, with a real extraction step still in place. The brand most associated with it publishes both claims plainly — that the process “uses roughly 80% less water than traditional steam cleaning” and that “it takes only 1 to 2 hours for carpets to dry.” (Chem-Dry, chemdry.com, verified 31 August 2026.)

Its real limitation: less water in means less flushing out. That is the trade, and it is a reasonable one for a carpet in decent condition.

Worth knowing: their core solution is published openly — sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, adipic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid and gum arabic — and they state it contains no soaps, detergents or surfactants. That is a real difference and we would not pretend otherwise.

Encapsulation

A polymer is worked into the carpet. It crystallises around the soil, and the crystals are vacuumed out afterwards — often the next day, by whoever does the regular vacuuming.

Best at: commercial floors that must stay in service. Thirty to sixty minutes and the space is usable again, at a fraction of the cost of a deep clean.

Its real limitation: not all of the polymer comes back out. Run cycle after cycle with no extraction in between and residue accumulates in the pile — which is why the industry’s own recommended programme is regular encapsulation plus a periodic deep extraction, not encapsulation forever.

Who uses it: commercial and facilities contractors, mostly.

Why does my carpet get dirty again so quickly?

Bonnet

A rotary machine spins an absorbent pad — the bonnet — dampened with solution, across the face of the carpet.

Best at: the fastest appearance refresh there is. If a lobby needs to look presentable before a viewing this afternoon, this is the honest answer.

Its real limitation: it cleans the top of the pile and nothing below it, the downward pressure can compress the pile and push soil deeper, and there is no rinse or recovery step at all. It re-soils faster than any other method — two to three weeks in medium traffic. The industry standard classes it maintenance only, not a periodic deep clean.

Dry compound

A damp absorbent powder, carrying solvent and water, is spread and buffed through the pile, then vacuumed out.

Best at: carpets that genuinely must not get wet, and rooms that cannot afford any drying time at all.

Its real limitation: the same one as encapsulation, without the polymer chemistry — recovery of the compound is not complete, and there is no flushing.

What the industry standard actually says

There is a published standard for this trade — IICRC S100, the standard of care for professional carpet cleaning — and it has already answered most of the argument. It does not crown a winner. It sorts the methods into two jobs.

They are not rivals. They are a sequence.

This is the part almost every marketing page leaves out, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

The recommended programme is all three together: regular vacuuming, interim cleaning to hold appearance between times, and a periodic deep extraction to reset it. Not one method forever. A cycle.

Which means the honest answer to “which method is best” is usually “both, at different times” — and a company that sells you only one, forever, is selling you a subscription rather than a maintenance plan.

Why the interim methods need the restorative one

Here is the mechanism, and it is the reason the sequence exists rather than being a preference.

Encapsulation works by leaving something behind on purpose. A polymer crystallises around the soil so a vacuum can lift it out afterwards. That is the design. But not all of it comes back out — and across repeated cycles with no extraction in between, the residue accumulates in the pile.

Dry compound has the same shape without the polymer: the compound is buffed in, vacuumed out, and recovery is not complete.

So the deep extraction is not an upsell bolted onto an interim programme. It is the step that makes the interim programme sustainable, and it is in the standard for that reason.

⚠️ What this does not mean. It does not mean interim methods are bad, or that anyone using one is cutting corners. A commercial floor cleaned by encapsulation every six weeks and extracted once a year is being maintained properly — better, in fact, than a floor deep cleaned once and ignored. The failure is not choosing an interim method. The failure is choosing one and never doing the other.

What the carpet manufacturers require

You do not have to take a cleaner’s word for any of this. The companies that made your carpet already wrote down what they want, because their warranty depends on it.

That is not an opinion about which method wins. It is the condition attached to the floor you already own — and if a method is not hot-water extraction, it does not meet it.

Worth asking any cleaner: what training they have actually done, and whether their method meets your carpet’s warranty conditions. We are IICRC-trained and we use hot-water extraction, which is what the table above asks for.

And notice what they left out

This is the part worth sitting with. These companies have every commercial reason to recommend the cheapest maintenance that protects their warranty. A manufacturer would love it if a cheap interim clean kept carpets looking good and claims down.

They recommend two things: regular vacuuming, and periodic professional hot-water extraction. Not encapsulation. Not bonnet. Not dry compound.

If an interim method did the job of a deep clean, the people who make carpet for a living would have said so. They did not, and that silence is worth more than most of the marketing written about it.

Our recommendation — and it is ours, not the standard’s

Everything above this line is the industry standard and the manufacturers. This part is our opinion, and you should read it as one.

If you can wait, skip the middle layer. Vacuum well, leave the carpet a little longer, and put the money into one proper hot-water extraction instead of splitting it across an interim clean and a deep clean.

Three reasons we would say that to a friend:

It is usually cheaper, not dearer. An interim clean is not free, and it does not remove the need for the deep one. Paying for both is paying twice to arrive where one would have taken you.

It is one company, one process, one set of chemistry. Different contractors bring different products, and what one leaves behind is what the next one has to work with. Fewer hands on your carpet is genuinely better for it.

And the evidence is not evenly matched. Hot-water extraction has independent, peer-reviewed studies behind it — the allergen work we cite elsewhere on this site is published research, not our own testing. When we went looking for equivalent before-and-after soil-removal data for the interim methods, we could not find any that was not published by a company selling that chemistry. That does not prove those methods do not work. It does mean the two are not supported by the same weight of evidence, and you should know that before you pay for either.

When we would say the opposite

There is a real case for interim cleaning and it is not a small one.

If you cannot accept downtime — a hotel lobby, a restaurant floor, a retail space where the carpet has to look right at nine tomorrow morning — then an interim clean is the right call and we would tell you so. Thirty minutes back in service is something hot-water extraction simply cannot offer.

Do that when you need it. Then book the deep clean for a quiet evening or a closed Sunday, and get both jobs done properly instead of asking one method to be the other.

Why the water is the part you cannot remove

There is a model this trade has used since 1959. Sinner’s Circle, named after Herbert Sinner, a chemist at Henkel, and it holds that every cleaning process anywhere is made of four things:

Temperature · Chemical · Agitation · Time

And the useful part is how they behave together: they trade against each other. Turn one down and you can hold the result by turning another up. Less heat, more dwell time. Less chemistry, more agitation. That is not a loophole — it is the model, and it is why a careful cleaner can get a good result at a lower temperature on a delicate fibre.

But the trade only works while all four are present. Remove one entirely and the others cannot cover for it. All the heat in the world with no cleaning agent does very little. Perfect chemistry with no agitation leaves the soil exactly where it was.

And there is a fifth, sitting in the middle

Sinner’s four factors suspend the soil. They lift it off the fibre and hold it in the water.

Nothing in those four removes it from your house.

That is what the water does, and it is why extraction is not one method’s preference — it is the step where the dirt actually leaves. Suspend soil and do not flush it, and you have moved it around your carpet rather than taken it away. You can have heat, chemistry, agitation and all the time in the world, and if nothing carries the soil out, the carpet still holds it.

You can watch this happen

This is the one claim on the page you do not have to take on trust, because you can see it.

A hot-water extraction fills a recovery tank, and the water in it is filthy. Every job, without exception. That is not a demonstration we set up — it is a by-product of the method, and any cleaner using it can show you the tank.

Ask to look at it. A method with no extraction step has no tank to show, and that is not an accusation — it is simply how those methods work. The soil they suspend is meant to leave later, in a vacuum bag.

What we see on carpets that have only had interim cleans

We will be plain that this is our own observation from doing the work, not a study.

When we deep-clean a carpet that has been maintained on interim cleaning alone, it gives up a lot more soil than a carpet on a regular extraction cycle does. Visibly more, in the tank, on a floor that looked perfectly clean when we arrived.

That is what you would expect if soil is being suspended and re-settled rather than removed — but we are describing what we see, not proving a mechanism, and you should weigh it as exactly that.

What we can say with more confidence: the customers whose carpets last are the ones who vacuum properly and have a proper extraction once a year. That pattern is consistent enough across our own jobs that we would stake the recommendation on it.

The three things said about hot-water extraction

If you have been reading around, you have probably met these already. They are the three arguments made against our method, and all three contain something true — which is exactly why they work.

We have quoted each one word for word, with a date, rather than paraphrasing it into something easier to knock down.

1. “It leaves sticky residue that attracts dirt”

True, and it is the best of the three. Detergent left in a carpet is sticky, sticky holds dirt, and a carpet cleaned that way looks brilliant on the day and grubby again within weeks. Anyone who has had a cheap clean has seen it happen.

What it leaves out is the rinse. Residue is what happens when detergent goes in and is not taken back out. The complaint is not really about hot water — it is about a job that stopped halfway. We finish with a low-pH conditioning rinse rather than plain water, precisely so there is nothing sticky left to grab dirt.

⚠️ And it cuts both ways. Every method puts chemistry into your carpet. A method with no extraction step cannot rinse either — whatever it uses stays in the pile until a vacuum lifts it later. “No soap” is not the same claim as “no residue”, and it is worth knowing which one you are being sold.

2. “It takes 24 hours or more to dry”

True of a bad job, and we will not pretend otherwise. A machine that puts more water in than it pulls back out will leave carpet damp for a day or longer, and there are operators doing exactly that. A rented supermarket machine will do it reliably.

It is not true of ours. Walk-on dry in 2–4 hours with decent airflow and low humidity, and longer on a cold, still day — we say that plainly on our own service page rather than promising a best case.

The honest framing is that dry time is not a property of the method. It is a property of the machine and the person using it. How much water goes in, how much vacuum pulls it back, how much hose is between the wand and the van. Those decide it, and they vary enormously between two companies both calling themselves steam cleaners.

How long should carpet take to dry after cleaning?

3. “It over-wets carpet and causes mould”

This one is made hardest and most often. A search will find pages titled “The Mold & Bacteria Risk in Standard Steamer Cleaning” and “8 Reasons Why Steam Cleaning Is Bad For Your Carpet”, all published by companies selling a different method.

⚠️ One of them states that “about 30% of homeowners reported experiencing mold after using steam cleaning” and names no study, no sample and no source. We mention it because it is a good example of what this page is for: a number with nothing behind it is not evidence, it is decoration.

Now the part where we agree with them.

Wet carpet does grow mould. That is not marketing, it is straightforward — the EPA’s working figure is that mould can begin to establish after roughly 24 to 48 hours of moisture. A carpet and underlay left damp for two days is genuinely at risk.

So the danger is real. The attribution is wrong.

The question was never which method. It is how long the carpet stays wet.

A carpet walk-on dry in 2–4 hours never opens that window. A carpet left wet for two days does — whatever made it wet.

That is why we publish a dry time at all, why we meter drying rather than guess at it, and why our own page says a badly done hot-water extraction can leave carpet wet for two days. It is the same argument they are making. We just follow it to the operator rather than to the method.

Can carpet be over-wet during cleaning?

What the three have in common

Each takes a real failure of bad work and attaches it to the method instead.

Residue is a job that skipped the rinse. Slow drying is a machine that could not pull the water back. Mould is a carpet nobody dried. All three are things a careless operator does — and all three are avoided by the same thing, which is caring about the extraction half of the job.

Ask any cleaner the questions rather than trusting the category. We have written those down too: the questions to ask any carpet cleaner, including the one that cannot be talked around — can I see the water you took out of my carpet?

Four times we would not use our own method

A page arguing for hot-water extraction is worth very little if it cannot say where hot-water extraction is the wrong answer. Here are four, and the first one we do something different on every week.

On wool, we use a low-moisture method ourselves

Wool does not want a lot of water. It shrinks, it can brown as it dries, and the dye is less forgiving than a synthetic pile. So on a wool carpet we run a gentle, wool-safe, low-moisture process — the same category of method this page has spent several thousand words putting in its place.

That is not a contradiction. It is the whole argument. The method follows the fibre in front of us, not the one we prefer to sell. A company that runs the same process on everything has stopped making decisions, and we would say that about ourselves as readily as anyone.

On silk, antiques and anything marked “dry clean only”, we say no

Some things should not be hot-water cleaned by anyone, and a few should not be cleaned by us. Very old, delicate or antique rugs are quoted on inspection, and some of them are genuinely safer with a specialist who does nothing else. We would rather hand that job on than be the company that learned on your rug.

If an item carries a “dry clean only” label or a no-hot-water instruction, that settles it — and it settles it before we start, not afterwards.

When the carpet is finished, replace it

Cleaning fixes what is on a carpet. It does not fix what is left of one. If the backing has gone, the pile is matted flat through the traffic lanes, or the fibre itself has worn away, no method on this page brings that back — ours least of all, because we would be putting water into something that cannot recover from it.

We tell people this on jobs we could have taken. A clean that cannot change anything is money you should be keeping toward the new floor.

For a small fresh spill, do it yourself

You do not need us for a cup of tea knocked over ten minutes ago. Blot it — do not rub — with a clean white cloth, work from the outside in, and use water rather than a supermarket spot remover, most of which leave a sticky patch that attracts dirt and is harder for us to shift later than the original spill was.

Call someone when it is set, when it has come back, or when it smells. Those are the ones where the method actually matters.

Three questions this page has earned you

Why they work: none of them can be answered with a brand name, and all three have a correct answer that a good operator will give you happily.

A cleaner who says “we use encapsulation, it is an interim clean, and you will want an extraction every year or so” has just told you the truth and earned the job. One who cannot say which of the five they use, or who says theirs does everything, has told you something too.

So which one do you actually need?

There is no best method. There is a best method for the state your carpet is in, and for most carpets the honest answer is both, at different times.

  • If it looks tired and you want it back: that is a restorative job. Hot-water extraction, and it is what your carpet’s maker asks for.
  • If it looks fine and has to stay that way, with no downtime: that is interim. Encapsulation or bonnet, and we would tell you so.
  • If it is wool, silk or something precious: the fibre decides, not the method — and sometimes not us.
  • If it is worn out: neither. Keep the money for the new floor.

The thing worth taking away

All five methods work when the person using them cares about the half of the job that happens after the cleaning agent goes down.

Residue, slow drying and damp carpet are not properties of a method. They are what happens when nobody finishes. That is why the useful question was never “which method do you use” — it is “what is still in my carpet when you leave, and how did it get out?”

Any cleaner worth booking will enjoy being asked that. Including us.
