Which carpet stains cannot be removed?
The ones that are not stains. A stain is something added to the fibre and can often be removed. Bleach marks, sun fade, burns and wear are the fibre or its dye being damaged or removed — there is nothing left to lift out, so cleaning cannot reverse them.

When is a mark not a stain?
Some marks aren’t stains at all — and that’s exactly why no cleaner can shift them.
When a mark stays, someone didn’t try hard enough
A good enough cleaner, with strong enough product, gets everything out. If a mark stays, somebody didn’t try hard enough or didn’t have the right chemical.
A stain was added to the fibre. Damage happened to it
There’s a category difference hiding inside the word “stain”, and once you see it, most of the disappointment in this trade makes sense.

You can lift out something that was added. You cannot put back something that was taken away. No product does that, at any price, from any company.
The mark looks the same to you. The two situations have nothing in common.
Bleach doesn’t add a mark — it removes the colour that was there
Bleach and chemical colour loss
Household bleach, some acne creams, certain cleaning products and a few medications strip the dye out of the fibre. The fibre itself is often perfectly healthy — it’s just colourless now.
There is nothing sitting there to remove. Cleaning a bleach mark makes it a very clean bleach mark. The only real fix is re-dyeing or a patch repair, and neither is a cleaning job.
Sun fade
The same outcome by a slower route. UV breaks down dye over months and years, usually in a band by a window or along a doorway. It’s rarely noticed until the furniture moves.
Again: the colour is gone, not covered.
Burns and heat damage
Synthetic carpet is plastic. A cigarette, an iron, a dropped ember or a hot appliance foot melts it. The fibre fuses, hardens and changes shape, and the mark is a physical deformation as much as a discolouration.
Cleaning does nothing, because the fibre is no longer the shape it was.
Wear
Traffic lanes that stay dark after cleaning are often not dirty. The fibre tips have been abraded — scuffed by grit underfoot until they scatter light differently. A worn area looks dull next to an unworn one no matter how clean both are.
This one is genuinely hard to tell from soiling before treatment, which is why an honest cleaner will often say “we’ll find out.”
Pile reversal (shading)
Patches that look lighter or darker depending on where you stand. The pile has permanently changed direction. It isn’t a mark at all — it’s an optical effect, and it isn’t a fault in the clean or the cleaner.
And the ones that are stains, but have gone too deep
Ink, dye transfer, old pet accidents and red food colouring often are removable in principle — but if they’ve reached the backing or the underlay, no surface treatment gets to them. They may also wick back up after cleaning, which reads as a failed clean and is actually a depth problem.
Re-treating a bleach mark is money spent on something that cannot work
- It changes what you should be paying for. Repeated treatment of a bleach mark is money spent on something that was never going to work.
- It changes who you call. Some of these have real fixes — re-dyeing, a patch from a wardrobe offcut, a burn repair. They’re just not cleaning.
- It explains a lot of bad reviews. A cleaner who promised the mark would go, took the money, and didn’t deliver has usually mis-identified damage as soil — sometimes honestly.
- Knowing before you book protects you. A mark identified as permanent up front is a disappointment. The same mark discovered afterwards is a dispute.

- Is this a stain or is it damage? The single most useful question on this page.
- Which of these do you expect to lift, and which are you unsure about? Unsure is a legitimate and often correct answer.
- If it turns out to be permanent, what are my options? Repair, patch, re-dye, or live with it.
- Will treating it make it worse? Sometimes aggressive attempts on damage cause distortion on top of discolouration.

We look before we quote, and we say which is which. Some marks we expect to lift. Some we’d want to test first, because testing is genuinely how you find out. And some we’ll tell you straight away are permanent — we’ll still try if you want us to, but not while pretending it’s likely.
A cleaner who promises every mark will come out has told you something important. Not that they’re confident — that they haven’t looked properly, or they have and they’d rather close the job. Nobody can see inside a carpet from the doorway, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing with your money.
We’d rather be the ones who told you the truth about a bleach spot than the ones who charged you twice to clean it.
