What is the difference between steam cleaning and hot water extraction?
They are the same method. 'Steam cleaning' is the everyday name for hot water extraction, and the word is useful because it separates high-heat cleaning from the warm and cold-water methods. What matters is not the word — it is whether the operator has the heat to back it up.

The myth
Steam cleaning and hot water extraction are two different services, and one of them is better. Somewhere there’s a right word to ask for.
The reality
They’re the same method. “Steam cleaning” is what almost everyone calls hot water extraction — customers, cleaners, and most of the industry. Hot water and detergent go into the pile under pressure, and a vacuum pulls the soil back out with the water.
Some people will tell you the term is technically wrong, because at the fibre you’re working with very hot water rather than steam in the physics sense. That’s true, and it doesn’t matter much — because the word is carrying something genuinely useful.
What “steam” is actually telling you
The word separates one family of cleaning from another, and it’s a real distinction:

So when somebody asks for a steam clean, they aren’t confused about thermodynamics. They are asking for the hot one with the suction. That’s a sensible thing to ask for, and the word does the job.
The catch is that the word costs nothing to use. A small portable that struggles to hold heat across one room and a van-mounted system that doesn’t can both be advertised as “steam cleaning”, and both are using the word correctly. The term tells you what someone is attempting. It tells you nothing about whether they can do it.
Why the heat matters at all
Heat does one job: it makes soil let go faster. Warm water eventually shifts what hot water shifts quickly — which means the alternative to heat is more chemistry, more agitation, more passes, or a worse result.
There’s a ceiling, though, and it’s worth knowing about because it explains why nobody should promise you literal steam.
Above 100°C, water becomes actual steam — and actual steam is bad for carpet. It flashes off into the air instead of rinsing soil away, it can leave chemical residue behind, and it can soften the latex bonding the two backings together.
Real steam at the carpet isn’t the premium version. It’s a fault. The professional target is water that’s hot enough to work and still liquid enough to rinse and be extracted.
Where the number gets slippery
Every temperature quoted in this trade is measured at the machine, because that’s the only place it can be. Water then travels the hose to your carpet and sheds heat the whole way — further on a long run, further on a cold morning, further if the machine can’t hold its output while water keeps flowing.
So two companies quoting a similar figure can deliver very different heat to your floor, and neither one is lying. → Are all truck mounts the same?
Why it matters
- The word is not a filter. Everyone uses it, so it separates nobody. The follow-up questions do.
- Under-equipped operators aren’t dishonest, they’re just limited. A small portable genuinely cannot hold high heat across a lounge, and it will still say “steam clean” on the van.
- Low-moisture methods have their place. Commercial maintenance between deep cleans, or a carpet that genuinely can’t be wetted. They just aren’t the same job.
- Chasing the highest number is the wrong instinct — past 100°C you’re buying a problem.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is it hot water extraction, or a low-moisture method? Both are legitimate. You should know which you’re buying.
- What temperature, and measured where? “At the machine” is the honest answer.
- Does the heat hold on a big job, or does it need a break?
- Truck-mounted or portable? Portables are perfectly good on small jobs and struggle on large ones.
- How much extraction follows? Heat suspends soil. Vacuum is what removes it. → Vacuum: the number nobody talks about
How ApexClean does it

Water is heated to 120°C at the machine by a dedicated Little Giant 3HTHP, 120,000 BTU, LPG-fired — its own burner, not warmth recovered from an engine that’s already driving the vacuum and the pump. That’s why it holds when the trigger stays down.
At the carpet we work to roughly 70–90°C on a synthetic pile, and far cooler on wool or olefin, which are damaged by heat that suits nylon. That range is from experience, not a laboratory, and we’d rather say so than quote you a decimal place nobody can hold.
Hot enough to release the soil. Never hot enough to be actual steam by the time it reaches your floor. That’s the whole craft, and it’s the part the word can’t tell you.
