Why does my carpet smell worse after it has been cleaned?

A carpet that smells worse after cleaning has usually been woken up, not dirtied.

The myth

The cleaner used something cheap or strong, and what you’re smelling is the product.

The reality

Occasionally it is the product. Far more often it’s something that was already in your carpet, sitting there perfectly quiet because it was dry — and cleaning gave it water back.

Most household odour sources are dormant when dry and active when damp. That’s not a cleaning failure in itself. It becomes one when the carpet stays damp long enough for the smell to establish rather than pass.

The physics

The wet-dog smell

That specific smell is bacteria becoming active again in a damp environment — the same reason a towel left in a gym bag smells and a dry one doesn’t.

Bacteria living in the base of the pile and in the backing are dormant while the carpet is dry. Add moisture and warmth and they resume, releasing volatile compounds. Get the carpet dry within hours and it passes. Leave it damp for three days and you’ve run a small incubator.

Old pet accidents

The worst offender, and the most misunderstood.

Urine soaks through the pile into the backing and often into the underlay. It dries, and the salts crystallise. Dry crystals are close to odourless — which is why a house can smell fine for months and then be unmistakable after a clean.

Add water and those crystals dissolve back into solution. The odour returns at full strength, sometimes stronger than the original event, because a general clean has re-wet the whole contaminated area rather than treated it.

This is the single most common reason a customer says the clean made things worse. It did not create the problem. It revealed one that was already there — and a surface clean was never the right tool for it.

Milk, food and protein spills

Same mechanism. Protein in the backing, dormant while dry, sour again when wet.

Actual detergent smell

Why it matters

• It tells you the contamination is deeper than the pile. If a smell appears after cleaning, it lives below where a general clean reaches.
• Re-cleaning the same way makes it worse, because it re-wets without treating.
• The fix is different work. Urine contamination needs a treatment that reaches and breaks down what’s in the backing — not more of the same wash.
• Speed matters. A carpet dry in a few hours rarely smells for long. One damp for days usually does.
• Sometimes the underlay is the answer. If it soaked through, cleaning the carpet cannot reach it. That’s an honest conversation, not a failure.

Questions to ask before booking

1. Have there been pet accidents here — even years ago? Say yes even if you think it was dealt with. It changes the whole approach.
2. Will a general clean fix an odour, or does it need separate treatment? The honest answer is usually separate treatment.
3. What happens if the smell gets worse rather than better?
4. How fast will it dry? The single biggest factor in whether a smell settles or passes.
5. Can you tell whether it’s reached the underlay?
