Does hose length matter in carpet cleaning?
Yes, more than most people realise. Vacuum and heat are both lost over the length of the hose, and the loss increases the harder the machine is working — so a long run gives up performance exactly when the job needs it most. Nothing about it looks different while it is happening.

The myth
A truck mount is a truck mount. It doesn’t matter whether the van is outside your door or around the corner, because it’s the same machine either way.
The reality
It is the same machine at the van. It is not the same machine at the wand.
Both of the things that clean your carpet — vacuum and heat — are lost over the length of the hose. The machine’s specification is measured at the machine. What reaches your lounge is whatever survived the trip.
The physics
Vacuum is lost to friction. Air dragging along the inside wall of a hose gives up energy the whole way, and there are real measured numbers for it. In a 1¼-inch hose, a run of 25 feet moving 40 CFM of air gives up about 2.34 inches of water lift. Push 80 CFM through 30 feet and the loss roughly doubles, to about 4.65 inches.
Read those two figures again, because the important part is easy to miss. The length barely changed — 25 feet to 30 feet. The airflow doubled, and the loss doubled with it. Hose loss is not a flat toll you pay per metre. It rises steeply the harder the machine works — which means you lose the most vacuum at exactly the moment you need it most, on the heavy, wet, dirty part of the job.
Add a second run of hose to reach an upstairs back bedroom and you are not paying a small tax. You are compounding one.
Heat is lost the same way, for a different reason. Water heated at the machine sheds its temperature to the hose wall and to the air around it the whole way down. Longer run, colder day, more loss. And when you stop for two minutes to move a sofa, the water standing in that hose keeps cooling — so the first pass after every pause starts colder than the last one finished.
The invisible part is what makes this worth writing about. A long hose run looks identical to a short one from where you’re standing. The wand moves the same way. The machine still roars outside. Nothing tells you that the extraction reaching your carpet is a fraction of what the brochure promised.
Why it matters
Less vacuum at the wand means more water left in the carpet, and everything follows from that: it stays damp for days, old soil in the backing dissolves and wicks back to the surface as a stain, and damp fibre resoils faster than dry fibre.
Less heat at the wand means the solution is working below the temperature it was designed for, so more of it, or more agitation, or more time is needed to shift the same soil.
It is entirely possible to be sold a very powerful machine and receive a mediocre clean, purely because of where the van was parked and how much hose came off the reel.
Questions to ask before booking
- Where will you park, and roughly how much hose will you run to reach me?
- If it won’t reach, do you add hose or move the van? Moving the van is the better answer. Adding hose is the convenient one.
- Do you work room by room and reposition, or run everything from one spot?
- Does the extra distance change what you can promise on dry time? An honest cleaner will say yes, because it does.
- What’s your maximum run before you’d tell a customer it affects the result?
