Does pre-spraying carpet before cleaning actually make a difference?
Yes — a large one, and it is measured. Detergent used only in the machine's tank cleans just 4.6% better than plain hot water. The same chemistry sprayed onto the carpet first and given time to work cleans 3.54 times better than in-tank use, according to laboratory testing for the Carpet and Rug Institute.

The chemical in the machine’s tank is doing almost nothing.
That isn’t an opinion. It was measured in a laboratory, by a testing house, for the body that represents carpet manufacturers — and the numbers are not close.
4.6% — how much better detergent-in-the-tank cleans than plain hot water. 3.54× — how much better the same chemistry cleans when it’s sprayed on first.
The myth
The machine cleans the carpet. Whatever cleaning solution the operator has in the tank goes down the hose, into the fibre, and does the work on the way through.
The reality
Chemistry needs time in contact with soil to break its grip. Solution injected through a wand is in the carpet for a second or two before the vacuum takes it back out. It never gets the time.
Spray the same product on first, let it sit, agitate it, then extract — and the difference is not marginal. It is more than three and a half times.
The evidence
The Carpet and Rug Institute commissioned Gary Asbury of Professional Testing Laboratory and Jeff Bishop of Clean Care Seminars to test this properly. Soil removal was measured with a spectrophotometer against the AATCC gray scale, producing ΔE values — an objective measure of how much soil actually left the carpet, rather than somebody’s opinion of how it looked.

That last row is 3.54 times the in-tank result — a 71.99% improvement. The paper’s own summary is blunt about it: in-tank chemicals produced soil removal “only slightly better than flushing with plain water.”
⚠️ One honest caveat, stated by the paper itself: these are ΔE soil-removal measurements, and “this percentage of soil removal does not necessarily correlate to a comparable percentage of visual improvement in carpet appearance.” More soil left the carpet. It does not mean the carpet looked 3.54 times better.
The physics
Three things have to happen before soil will let go of a fibre, and a wand passing over the top can only deliver one of them.
Chemistry has to reach the soil. A pre-spray is applied to the surface and worked down through the pile. In-tank solution arrives under pressure at the moment of extraction — it goes in and comes straight back out.
It needs dwell time. Detergents work by breaking the bond between soil and fibre, and that takes minutes, not seconds.
10–15 minutes is all a modern preconditioner needs. The CRI test used 10.
It needs agitation. Chemistry sitting on the tips of the pile isn’t touching the soil at the base of the yarn. Something has to move it down and spread it evenly — a groomer, a brush, a rake.
Miss any one of those and you’re back to relying on the tank.
The part that happens before any of it
There’s a step before the pre-spray, and industry data says it’s the biggest one.
74–79% of the soil in a carpet is dry particulate — grit, fibre, protein, cellulose. Not stains. Dirt.
That figure comes from surveys conducted by DuPont and others, and it changes what the job actually is. Most of what’s in your carpet can be vacuumed out while it’s still dry.
And here’s the trap: if it isn’t removed dry, then the moment chemistry or water hits it, that particulate absorbs the liquid, gains weight, and becomes considerably harder to remove. Dry soil is dust. Wet soil is mud. Wetting a carpet before vacuuming it properly turns an easy problem into a hard one.
It’s why dry soil removal is the first of the five principles in the IICRC’s S100 standard — the industry’s cleaning standard, first written in 1991:
- Dry soil removal
- Soil suspension (the pre-spray)
- Suspended-soil removal (the extraction)
- Grooming, as necessary
- Drying
Four of those five happen before anyone thinks about the machine’s settings.
Why it matters
- A fast job skips the dwell. Pre-spray, agitate, wait ten minutes — that’s ten minutes of a cleaner’s day doing nothing visible. It is the easiest thing in the world to cut, and cutting it costs most of the cleaning.
- “We use a premium solution” tells you nothing if the premium solution is in the tank.
- Skipping the dry vacuum makes everything downstream harder and puts more water into the carpet chasing soil that could have been lifted out dry.
- It explains the disappointing clean that had nothing visibly wrong with it. No streaks, no damage, nothing to complain about — it just didn’t come up as much as you hoped.
Questions to ask before booking
- Do you pre-spray, and how long does it dwell? Ten minutes is the number.
- How do you agitate it in? If there’s no answer, the pre-spray is sitting on the tips.
- Do you dry vacuum before you wet anything? Three quarters of the soil is waiting for exactly that.
- Is your chemistry in the tank, sprayed on, or both?
- How many dry passes at the end? The CRI test used one wet pass and two dry.
How ApexClean does it

Then the pre-spray goes on, gets agitated into the pile rather than left on the tips, and is given its dwell time. The extraction that follows is a rinse of suspended soil, not a one-second attempt to clean and remove in the same pass.
It’s slower. That’s the entire point — the ten minutes where nothing appears to be happening is where most of the cleaning gets done.

Definition of preconditioning, as the paper gives it: “applying properly formulated detergent solutions to soiled carpet to maximize soil suspension or separation from individual fibers comprising pile yarns, or the wear surface of the carpet.”
⚠️ Read the caveat with the headline number. The 16.3% / 3.54× figures measure soil removed, not appearance improved. The authors say so explicitly, and anyone quoting the figure without that caveat — including us — would be overstating it.
