Is cheap carpet cleaning worth it?
Sometimes, but understand what the price is buying. A very low quote is rarely a discount on profit — it is a discount on time, and the time that gets cut is dwell time, dry passes and repositioning. Those are the steps that decide dry time and whether stains come back.

The myth
Carpet cleaning is carpet cleaning. The machine does the work, so the cheap one and the expensive one are doing the same job — you’re just paying extra for a nicer van.
The reality
Look at what a cleaning business actually spends on a job. Fuel, chemistry and machine wear are a small part of it. The overwhelming cost is time, because time is the thing there’s a fixed amount of.
So when a price drops a long way, it isn’t usually margin being surrendered. It’s minutes being removed — and the minutes that go are always the same ones, because they’re the ones you can’t see afterwards.
The physics — what a rushed hour actually removes
Four jobs fit in a day. Six jobs fit in the same day if you take roughly twenty minutes out of each. Here is where those twenty minutes come from:
The dry vacuum, before anything gets wet. Industry surveys put 74–79% of carpet soil in the dry particulate category — grit and fibre that lifts out before water touches it. Skip it and that soil absorbs the solution, gets heavier, and becomes far harder to remove. Dry soil is dust. Wet soil is mud.
The dwell time. Pre-spray needs about ten minutes in contact with soil. It’s ten minutes where nothing appears to be happening — the easiest thing in the world to cut, and it costs most of the cleaning. The dry passes. Extraction with no solution running. Slow, dull, and the single biggest factor in whether the carpet is dry in three hours or damp on Tuesday. → Vacuum: the number nobody talks about
Repositioning the van. Running fifty metres of hose from where you parked is quicker than moving. It also costs you a meaningful share of the suction reaching your floor. → Why long hose runs leave your carpet wetter
None of those omissions are visible when the van leaves. The carpet looks clean either way. That’s precisely why they’re the ones that get cut.
Why it matters
The bill arrives later, in a different currency:
- It stays wet for days, because the water wasn’t extracted.
- A stain surfaces on Wednesday, because water left in the backing carried old soil up with it as it dried.
- It gets dirty again fast, because damp fibre holds soil and because detergent that wasn’t rinsed out stays behind attracting more.
- You book again sooner. Two cheap cleans a year instead of one proper one is not a saving.
- Occasionally it’s permanent — heat on wool, over-pressure on the backing, matting on olefin. Those aren’t cleanable faults.
Cheap isn’t always wrong. A rental between tenants, a room that just needs freshening, a carpet at the end of its life — sometimes fast and cheap is exactly the right purchase. The mistake is buying fast and cheap while expecting slow and thorough.
Questions to ask before booking
Price alone tells you nothing. These do:
- How many jobs are you doing that day? It’s the most honest question on this list.
- How long will you be at my place? Compare the answers. The spread is the story.
- Do you pre-spray, and how long does it dwell?
- Do you dry vacuum before wetting anything?
- What’s included at that price, and what’s extra? Cheap quotes that become expensive invoices are their own category of problem.
