That is not a figure of speech. Brick-making was done along the Whau creek in the 1800s by the Malam, Laurie, Hepburn and Archibald families, and they worked this ground because the clay was the right kind. It is still under every lawn and driveway in Glen Eden. Clay does not behave like sand: sand sits on top of the pile and vacuums out, while clay works into the base of the fibre and sets there. Waikumete — and what the old name tells you about the ground
The suburb was Waikumete until 1921, a name usually read as "stinking water", from the swampy flax country around what is now Kaurilands.
